The board of Barcelona daisies plucked one of his remaining this season before early elections.
Barca decided to change operator and sell television broadcasts to Telefonica for next season at a rate of 140 million, the same amount that has claimed the last two seasons of his previous provider, Mediapro. The decision is not trivial because the contract for the television rights of Barcelona is the largest source of income for the club by a single partner, well above what the Barcelona obtained from Nike as the athletic sponsor and Qatar Airways advertising on the shirt, whose contributions are around both the 30 million per year. 2015-16 for the season that is no longer Mediapro partner, travel partner in the last seven years, but Telefonica, who since the opening of Movistar TV has already landed in World motorcycling and formula 1.
The contract is only for one year because in 2016 should enter into force a decree being prepared by the Government. The new law will end with the individual agreements and force the National Professional Football League (LFP) to a centralized negotiating exploitation rights with a more equitable distribution, as in the Premier. Without going any further, the English league last week closed a package 6.900 million for three seasons, to be distributed among all.
For the next academic year, the Barcelona charged 140 million, which is the maximum allowed by the LFP. Since everything that exceeds this amount should go to stop a common fund and distributed among the remaining teams First.
Therefore, the offers of the two operators in the running were similar economically in television, according to sources who were directly involved in the negotiations.
At that point, the motivation to opt for Barca Telefonica has been strategic because the club was interested to associate with the third telecommunications company in the world.
"It is a matter of marketing and market", they explained to this newspaper from the blaugrana entity. In that sense, the meeting of the board of another contract also agreed to be the official sponsor Telefónica throughout Latin America, from Mexico to Argentina. The alliance has a duration of three years, in which Barca charged 13,3 million each year. In addition, the agreement could be extended to two more seasons.
The introduction in Latin America complete the expansion of Barcelona in a continent where the club, which has itself entered Europe, Asia and Africa, just worked so far beyond having two point partners in Mexico and Brazil. Thanks to the agreement, Telefonica and its subsidiaries Movistar and Vivo, you can roll ads involving South American first team players, including three strikers Leo Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, or the goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
"The president has called me to announce his decision and has hidden behind that does not harm us a lot because it's only for a year," he said in 8 day Jaume Roures, president of Mediapro, who did not lose hope to remain the operator until the end. Even on Sunday February 8 traveled to Bilbao with the plane of the expedition Blaugrana to converse with the president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, and economic vice president, Javier Faus. "Our offer was economically superior and also from the point of view of international expansion," he said Roures own.
In fact, contracts are apalabraron with Rosell and last September even drafted. Only it had to set a date for the signing. But then Bartomeu received a call from Telefonica and decided he wanted to listen to all parties. Have been Fausyel former director general Antoni Rossich which this mission ends its link with the club-, which have driven the negotiation of television rights.
Under the contract, Vice President Manel Arroyo was not involved in the final decision making by having personal business with Telefonica.
After retouch the organization of club executives and participate in sports, which terminated the contract of athletic director (Zubizarreta), created a technical committee (Rexach, Braida, Mestre and Bordas) and dismissed the team coach (Eusebio) the president stirred the economic section with finding a new great partner like Telefonica. With this decision, Bartomeu also breaks with the past, it was Laporta in 2006 who signed the first major contract with the company Roures, by 1.000 million in seven years. That agreement was improved in 2010, before the election, and was renovated in 2011 with Rosell already in office. Then one of the counterparties was outsourcing Barca TV.
With the new agreement, technical management and content production Barcelona official channel also changes hands and passes from Mediapro Telefonica, which has agreed to bear the cost of television.
The blaugrana club was the only team missing for position in the new battle for football rights. With his election, Movistar TV, and Barca have matches Espanyol, Celta and Real Sociedad, while Mediapro controls First 16 teams, including Real Madrid and Atletico. Not surprising that the two locals clubs have not signed with the Catalan company.
The agreement for the sale of television rights Barca formally covers one season but its significance goes beyond, has a strategic character, as have highlighted the intense negotiations with the two operators concerned.
Which he has been discarded, Mediapro, has had the unconditional support of the Qatari company specializing in investments in the international sports arena, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI).
The highest responsible for the firm, headed by Nasser Ghanim Al-Khelaifi, have expressed over talks on numerous occasions managers Barca preference for Mediapro. Through QSI Barca reached agreement shirt sponsorship of the Qatar Foundation.
This occurred while those responsible for the economic area of the board began preliminary negotiations for the renewal of shirt sponsorship and also the possible financing of the remodeling of the Camp Nou, with the addition of the name.
And in the final stretch, the last two days, the Qataris managers have reinforced their presence.
Yesterday, during the celebration of the board in which the choice of Telefonica's offer was formalized, the club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, received new calls for those responsible for QSI, which also owns the 100% of Paris Saint -Germain, club president Nasser Ghanim Al-Khelaifi.
